Meet Harley: New Opportunities in Richmond Hill
Harley Stevens knows firsthand the importance of education in building a pathway to a career. While studying sociology at Georgia Southern University, she says she developed a pivotal belief that led her to her current role as a Career Services Specialist at the new Richmond Hill Opportunity Center.
“(I believe) 'success' is determined not only by an individual’s will to succeed, but by cultural and structural influences (policies and institutions) that constrain and enable what is possible."
Harley is committed to removing barriers to success by providing wrap-around support, skills training and employment opportunities to Opportunity Center participants.
It’s a position she’s familiar with, as she worked previously as a workforce development program coordinator. She says she’s energized by working to “create community partnerships with employers and resources to create pathways to success for our clients by meeting them where they are.”
One of those pathways to success is Fast Track Manufacturing, a partnership between Goodwill, Worksource Georgia and Savannah Technical College. The six-week course is held at the Richmond Hill Opportunity Center. Rolling applications are open now.
Participants earn multiple industry-recognized credentials including Lean Six Sigma, OSHA 10, CPR and more; while taking part in experiences like virtual reality training and facility tours.
“I am most excited about working for an organization that has the capacity, resources, and ability to affect so much change within the Southeast Georgia region. I am confident that our team can push the needle forward, and that is what is most important,” shares Harley.
She adds that coming to work for Goodwill is a “full circle moment”. Harley enjoys antiquing and thrifting in her spare time.
“I find secondhand shopping to be an adventure as you never know what treasure you will find when you least expect it (not the mention all the benefits of doing so!)”
Purchases at Goodwill directly impact the ‘Cycle of Good’, funding free training and career services that are open to the public at the Richmond Hill Opportunity Center, where Harley is located. Goodwill Southeast Georgia also operates five other regional Opportunity Centers in Savannah, Statesboro, Jesup, Waycross and Brunswick.
