In just over six months, Christian has achieved impressive results through the training and support services at Goodwill Southeast Georgia. She is now working at Georgia Pacific as a forklift operator and production worker, equipped with relevant skills gained from her Opportunity Center training.
A Savannah native, Christian was eager to start working but faced obstacles due to a justice-involved experience. Determined to pursue certifications and new learning experiences, she connected with Goodwill’s Opportunity Center staff at a job fair. Encouraged by a career advancement trainer who told her, “You can do this,” Christian began visiting the Goodwill Opportunity Center on Sallie Mood Drive.
Her journey started with completing a resume. With Goodwill's services, she attended job fairs, secured employment, and received support for work clothes and gas. Although her initial job was challenging and she had to leave it, Christian continued applying for jobs and pursuing interviews with Goodwill’s support. She expressed an interest in Forklift and Jockey Truck Training, and Goodwill granted her a scholarship for these programs at Savannah Technical College.
Christian also participated in Interview Techniques Training, Soft Skills Training, and Ready Set Work at Goodwill; as well as the Fast Track Manufacturing Class, funded by the City of Savannah. She completed all these trainings within six months, preparing her for her new role at Georgia Pacific. Excited about the Jockey Truck opportunities at Georgia Pacific, she tells Opportunity Center staff she looks forward to cross-training in that department.
Christian's future goals include improving her credit, paying off her car, and saving money for a new home. The Goodwill Opportunity Center continues to support her with services like financial literacy classes, credit repair counseling, the Dream Maker program for home purchasing steps, and more. The Opportunity Center staff can't wait to see her accomplish her new set of goals!
