Walking Together for Inclusion, Opportunity and a Stronger Community

Every October, locals come together in  Forsyth Park for an event that is equal parts celebration, advocacy, and community. This year, Goodwill Southeast Georgia’s Unity Squad was proud to join the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society’s  21st Annual Buddy Walk, one of the nation’s most recognized awareness events supporting individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

The significance of this year’s milestone isn’t lost on us. The number 21 holds special meaning in the Down syndrome community, representing the extra copy of chromosome 21 that causes the condition. What a powerful and fitting anniversary to celebrate, surrounded by a community committed to inclusion and opportunity.

The Buddy Walk is more than a lap around the park. It’s a reminder that every individual has unique talents, strengths, and contributions to offer. It is a celebration of potential and a call to create communities and workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

At Goodwill Southeast Georgia, that belief guides our work every day. As a workforce development social enterprise, we see firsthand the impact that confidence, training, and meaningful employment can have on a person’s life. Through programs like AbilityOne, individuals of all abilities gain valuable job skills, earn a paycheck, build confidence, and take important steps toward achieving their goals.

One inspiring example is Alicia, whose journey through AbilityOne demonstrates the power of opportunity and support to unlock potential and create a path forward. Learn more in our AbilityOne Associate Spotlight: Meet Alicia.

The Buddy Walk also comes during National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a nationwide observance that celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and highlights the importance of inclusive workplaces.

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity should be too. This month, we invite you to celebrate the abilities, achievements, and contributions of individuals with disabilities and to help create a community where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
