There’s no denying it — the 2000s are back in style. Between low-rise denim and the resurgence of Hilary Duff, bringing back the trends we grew up with is cool. There’s no better time to tap into this nostalgia than when deciding on a Halloween costume. Not only are there so many Y2K character options to choose from, but you can find many of the styles from the early 2000s thrifted wear at Goodwill®. There’s no reason to pay retail price for a style that costs a small fraction of the price when you thrift it, not to mention that you could get the original thing!

How Do You Find a Unique Y2K Halloween Costume?

I took a trip to my local Goodwill store to browse the racks for Y2K costume inspiration. I recommend doing the same. You never know what you might find. Check out some of the creative costume ideas you can recreate with thrifted finds below!

The Cheetah Girls took the world by storm in 2003, and they’re still popular today. You can find a thrifted cheetah-print outfit at Goodwill and glam it up like the pop star you can become for Halloween. This vision board pairs a cheetah-print top with a leather jacket-and-skirt set, black heels and sunglasses. Don’t forget to accessorize to complete the look!

In 2004, Will Ferrell’s Anchorman was one of the most popular comedy movies. This nostalgic costume can be put together with a few thrifted pieces. Check out the sport coats at Goodwill, and pair one with a dress shirt and tie. If you want to take the costume one step further, don’t forget the iconic mustache, and make sure you’re always holding a pile of very important file folders and documents!

With the new show based on the movie being released this year, it’s fun to remember that 2001 brought Elle Woods and Bruiser into the spotlight. This is the perfect Halloween costume for 2026. To be Elle, think all things pink and girly. I love this hot pink jumpsuit I saw at Goodwill and would pair it with pink heels, a purse and sunglasses to complete the look. Of course, you’ll also need to find a stuffed-animal puppy to pop in your purse as the perfect Elle Woods accessory.

Finally, in 2006, Aquamarine was the mermaid everyone was talking about. This movie brought to life a beachy romance and a relatable story about growing up … to a point, of course, unless you also grow a mermaid tail when touching water! This blue metallic halter-top-and-midi-skirt set is absolutely perfect for dressing as Aquamarine. Pair it with seashell accessories, like jewelry or a seashell-embellished bag, and you’re on your way to bringing back memories of watching the movie for the first time when it came out two decades ago!

How can I make a last-minute thrifted Halloween costume?

The best way to start is with a trip to Goodwill. Walking around can give you inspiration, and Goodwill team members might be able to help you come up with new ideas too. As you’re planning, start with recognizable clothing colors and shapes, then add one defining accessory. Use the Goodwill costume planner for suggested shirts, pants, shoes and accessories.

Why choose a thrifted Halloween costume?

Thrifted pieces can create affordable, distinctive costumes while extending the useful life of donated clothing and accessories. It’s best to thrift from a nonprofit, like Goodwill, to ensure that your purchase goes to support your local community. At Goodwill, your purchases provide free education and job training programs to help people find jobs in manufacturing, IT, healthcare and more.
