Stories of Impact: Nia

Nia first walked through Goodwill Southeast Georgia’s doors looking for a way to complete community service hours. Nia never expected it would open up a new career opportunity.
The time spent working with Goodwill managers created significant learning opportunities. “It really showed me the importance of being accountable and owning your actions,” recalls Nia.

After completing 40 hours of service, Nia’s dedication and hard work didn’t go unnoticed. It led to an offer for a part-time retail position at Goodwill, which has now become a full-time role.
“I’ve been awarded so many opportunities, it’s hard to name them all. I’ve more than doubled my starting wage since I started working for (Goodwill Southeast Georgia), says Nia. “I’ve gained leadership skills that I will carry with me the rest of my life. I’ve also gained a new perspective on my community as a whole, and how one person can change a life.”

After a snowstorm hit the region, Nia experienced firsthand the genuine teamwork that is integral to Goodwill Southeast Georgia’s mission. A manager handed Nia a $100 bill, saying to stock up on groceries at home. This act of kindness reinforced Nia’s belief in Goodwill’s mission and the sense of community it fosters.
“I’ve gained structure, and I’ve found a sense of purpose. Knowing I’m coming to work every week, working towards a better future for my community, motivates me to give 100% every day.”
