Laura’s Story: Overcoming Barriers & Building Futures
Blog by: Laura Schmarkey, Grant Writer, Goodwill Southeast Georgia
When I first came across Goodwill Southeast Georgia, it was the name that drew me in: Goodwill. It’s a word that carries the promise of hope, action, and a commitment to building something better. As a young professional and single mom, I needed more than just a job-I needed a mission that aligned with my values and a pathway to sustainability for my family.
Living in an ALICE household (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) is a challenge that many people don’t recognize. ALICE represents individuals and families who are working hard but still struggling to cover basic needs like housing, childcare, transportation, and healthcare. We’re not living in poverty by definition, but we’re often one unexpected expense away from it. It’s not just about making ends meet; it’s about striving for more while juggling the responsibilities of being a parent, provider, and role model.
I wanted to show my son that with perseverance and opportunity, it is possible to dream of success and turn those dreams into reality.
As a single mom, I know how hard it is to juggle everything. It’s the constant balancing act of providing for my son while trying to create opportunities to grow and build a future for both of us. It’s wanting to say “yes” to your child’s dreams while quietly worrying if you can stretch the budget far enough to make it happen. It’s being employed but still feeling the weight of financial insecurity.
Goodwill became that opportunity. I didn’t just join an organization; I joined a movement. The mission to give people the tools they need-a hand up, not a handout-is something I witness every day in the work we do. Whether it’s workforce development, education, or connecting people with resources, there’s a ripple effect in every effort we make.

For me, Goodwill is more than just an employer; it’s a community where I can grow personally and professionally. It’s where I can give back to others who are navigating their own challenges, just as I am. It’s where I’ve found purpose and a renewed sense of hope-not just for myself but for the example I’m setting for my son.
There’s so much more to this store than meets the eye. Every item you purchase and every donation you make fuels a powerful mission that transforms lives. Behind our name is the strength to create lasting change and uplift the local community in meaningful ways.
As I continue on my journey, I know Goodwill is a pivotal part of my story. It’s not just helping me rise above ALICE; it’s helping me build a sustainable, fulfilling future. And for that, I’m grateful.
