Reading opens doors to imagination, discovery, and confidence. For children, books introduce new worlds and help build essential skills that lay the foundation for success long before a résumé or job interview ever comes into play.
At Goodwill Southeast Georgia, we see the impact of literacy firsthand, and Read United Day offered a powerful opportunity to come together in support of young readers across our community. As the flagship initiative of United Way of the Coastal Empire’s Read United program, Read United Day reaches students in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Liberty, and Long counties to promote literacy and foster a lifelong love of reading.
This year, 18 Goodwill volunteers were part of nearly 1,000 United Way volunteers visiting classrooms throughout the region, reading aloud to students and leaving behind a new book for each class. According to United Way, Read United Day 2026 benefited more than 20,000 children, making a meaningful impact-one story at a time.
From page‑turning excitement to shared laughter in classrooms, these moments reflect the heart of our commitment to service at Goodwill Southeast Georgia and the power of showing up for young readers.

Early access to reading supports language development, academic success, and confidence. When children are encouraged to read, they’re better prepared for school and beyond. This aligns closely with Goodwill’s mission of workforce development and empowerment at every stage of life.
Read United Day is one of the many ways community organizations and partners work together to ensure children have the tools they need to thrive.
The love of reading doesn’t end with Read United Day and neither does our commitment.
