Don’t Toss It—Transform It: How Campus Move Out Powers Good in Our Community

As summer approaches, college students across our region are packing up and heading into internships, moving home, or stepping into new careers.

It’s also a time when college campuses experience a significant surge in waste. Over the course of a school year, it’s easy to accumulate more than we realize. And when residence halls close, students are often left making quick decisions about what to take and what to leave behind.

At Goodwill Southeast Georgia, we see an incredible opportunity in that moment.

As a Campus Move Out partner with local colleges and universities, we provide a simple, sustainable solution: keeping usable items out of landfills and putting them back into circulation where they can do the most good.

For more than five years, we’ve partnered with Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) to support its Campus Move Out efforts. Since 2017, SCAD students and families have helped divert more than 442,400 pounds of usable items from local landfills ultimately turning everyday items into opportunities for our community

This year, we were proud to expand that impact through our first Campus Move Out partnership with Georgia Southern University. With donation collection points in both Savannah and Statesboro, students contributed an additional 38,400 pounds of goods, extending the reach of this program.

Programs like Campus Move Out are a powerful reminder of how simple actions can create meaningful impact.

As a social enterprise, every item donated to Goodwill helps fund no-cost education, job training, and employment services across Southeast Georgia. What might be left behind at the end of a semester can help someone take the next step toward employment and toward a more independent future.

That’s real impact and it’s made possible by our community.

If you’re cleaning out your closet, moving, or preparing for your next chapter, I encourage you to donate the items you no longer need. Together, we can keep usable goods out of landfills and continue creating pathways to opportunity for our neighbors.
