If you are on the hunt for some amazing, one-of-a-kind Halloween costume ideas, your search ends here!

At Goodwill®, we’re passionate about helping you create DIY costumes that are both entertaining and budget-friendly. Our tips for DIY Halloween costume ideas will ensure you stand out without haunting your wallet. So, grab your scissors, glue and a dash of imagination, and let’s dive into some delightful costume inspirations!

Create with Your Crew!

Step 1: Thrift the Base Outfit

Let’s dive in and make your childhood heroes in a half shell come to life – DIY style!

Start your transformation by visiting your local Goodwill Southeast Georgia stores. You’re looking for:

  • A green top (It can be a t-shirt, hoodie or long sleeve shirt.)
  • Green pants or leggings
  • Old-school sneakers (Any comfy pair will do, but bonus points if they’re a bit retro.)

This base will give you the right silhouette to start without breaking the bank.

Step 2: Choose your character

Before you accessorize, it’s decision time. Which member of the cowabunga crew are you?

  • Red and Sai – Bold and brash
  • Orange and Nunchaku – Fun and chill
  • Blue and Katana – The leader
  • Purple and Bo Staff – The tech genius

Once you choose your turtle, grab ribbon or fabric in the turtle’s signature color to use for your mask, arm/leg bands and belt accents.

Step 3: Craft Your Shell

Since you can’t just thrift a turtle shell (although you never know what you’ll find at Goodwill), this is where you’ll need to get creative. But don’t worry, this isn’t a complicated craft. Anyone can do it.

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • One large disposable aluminum roasting pan (for the shell shape)
  • Light green spray paint
  • Dark green spray paint
  • Thick black Sharpie or black paint pen
  • Ribbon or elastic (for straps)
  • X-Acto knife
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Newspaper or tarp (for spray painting)

‍ Shell Crafting Steps:

  1. Spray it down:
Lay the roasting pan upside down on a tarp or newspaper. Spray both sides with light green spray paint and let dry.
  2. Add depth:
Once dry, go in with the dark green spray paint on the outer part of the shell. This adds that cartoon-style dimension.
  3. Detail the shell:
Use your black Sharpie or paint pen to draw in the turtle shell pattern on the outside -think hexagons or rounded shapes, like a tortoise shell.
  4. Strap it up:
Use the X-Acto knife to cut four small slits – two on top, two on bottom – where your ribbon or elastic will thread through.
  5. Secure the straps:
Thread through your green ribbon and secure the top straps with hot glue to prevent slipping. Leave the ends long so you can adjust and tie or pin them in place later.

Optional Add-Ons (If You Want to Level Up)

If you’re really ready to go all-out, you can add in a few extra elements to your costume:

  • Face paint or a colored bandana mask
  • Brown belt to tie around the waist
  • Elbow/knee pads

Step 4: Turtle Time!
