Spring Cleaning, Solved: Meet Our Donation Detectives

Spring has officially arrived, and with warmer temperatures and longer days comes the familiar urge to clean out closets, garages, and those storage bins that haven’t been opened since last year.

If you’re anything like me, spring cleaning also comes with an assortment of groans and objections from kids who would much rather be outside enjoying the sunshine than inside helping sort socks. This year, I decided to try something different: Donation Detectives!

Turning Spring Cleaning into a Game

I’ve learned that one of the best ways to get kids involved in organizing is to make it fun. After using this activity at a community event for school-aged children, I decided to bring it home and put it to the test.

The goal was simple: clean out two dressers and an overstuffed closet filled with clothes that no longer fit. The result? Engaged kids, cleaner spaces, and three full bags ready to be donated to Goodwill.

How to be Donation Detectives

As we tackled each drawer, my boys put on their “detective hats” and searched for clues to decide where each item belonged:

The Keep Pile

Clues say the item is in good condition, fits well, and is something they still love and want to wear.

The Donate Pile

Clues point to items that are still in good shape but no longer fit or just aren’t their current “vibe.” These gently used pieces are perfect for donating.

The Discard Pile

Clues show the item has been well-loved (think holes, tears, or broken parts). These items have served their purpose and are ready to be responsibly discarded.

By the end of the game, we had organized closets and dressers and collected two bags of donations headed to Goodwill. Even better, my Donation Detectives understood why donating matters.

When you donate to Goodwill, your items do more than find a new home. They help fund job training, education, and employment opportunities right here in our neighborhoods, turning spring cleaning into real, lasting impact.

Ready to Try It?

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or boring. Whether you turn it into a game, tackle one drawer at a time, or enlist a few helpers, every donated bag makes room for something good.

As you refresh your space this season, consider making Goodwill part of your cleaning routine. Your gently used items can help create new opportunities for our neighbors, something always worth celebrating!
